36 Hours in Columbia, SC

36 Hours in Columbia, SC

Version 2

James and I recently went on a last minute trip to Columbia. We were only away for one night but it did both of us a world of good. It was such a relaxing city break, made even easier by Columbia being less than a 2 hour drive from Charlotte.

Columbia is the captial of South Carolina so we had to swing by the State Capitol Building and it’s gardens. One thing that was great about Columbia was that everything was walkable. We stayed at the Hampton Inn on Gervais St and were just a 6 minute walk away.

We then headed to the Soda City Market. It’s a farmers’ market right in the centre of the city. Main St is closed off and taken over by food, craft, coffee and homeware stalls. It is very popular and a great way to start off a relaxing day in a new city.

I love giant art – sculptures, murals etc. and who knew Columbia had so much to offer in this department. It’s home to the world’s largest fire hydrant … need I say more?

We then headed back towards the State Capitol as the University of South Carolina is literally right behind it, again, super walkable! It has an absolutley beautiful green surrounded by old dorms and academic buidings with giant columns.

After we spent a while making the most of being in the shade we headed along Greene St to Five Points. It’s the student area and a great place to grab a coffee and some lunch. We got a much needed iced coffee at Drip and came across this intersection which doesn’t look like anything I’ve seen around Charlotte. The number of palm trees around Columbia and the humidity really made us feel like we’d travelled way farther then we actually had.

We meandered along Gervais St and headed to the car. Before we left Columbia, we drove through Arsenal Hill, a very old residential neighbourhood that has some beautiful old homes. It was such a relaxing trip away and as a Brit I really enjoyed being able to walk everywhere.
